Paediatric First Aid (PFA) (12 hours)

This course is designed for personnel working in an environment with infants and young children (this may include childminders, nurseries, pre-school, primary school and after-school club staff).   This course is designed to meet the First Aid for Early Years Foundation Stage requirements of Ofsted - ideal for registered childminders, nursery workers or nannies (England & Wales). 


The course is recognised by Ofsted for Early Years and childcare registration and covers a full range of emergency scenarios for infants and young children. Ofsted states that at least one person in the childcare setting must hold the full Paediatric first aid certificate and all childminders must also hold the certificate.     

During your time with us you will learn how to assess an incident involving an infant and child. You will be able to manage an infant and child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally. We will cover such subjects as:

  • A systematic approach to incident management
  • Incident management scenarios
  • Dealing with incidents safely
  • Infant & Child CPR procedures, including AED / Defibrillator use
  • Choking in Infants & Children
  • Circulation Problems – Internal bleeding, external bleeding and treatment for bleeding
  • Shock - Hypovolemic and Anaphylactic
  • Hypothermia and Hyperthermia, Febrile convulsions
  • Treating Damage - suspected fractures, head, neck and back injuries
  • Eye injuries and foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses
  • Bites and stings
  • Poisoning
  • Burns and scalds
  • Electric shock
  • Common illness, recognition and management of: Epilepsy, Asthma, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Diabetes
  • Record keeping and action plans

The Paediatric First Aid course involves at least 12 hours run over 2 Days. This course is suitable for those who need to satisfy Ofsted First Aid for Early Years Foundation Stage requirements, or anyone involved in childcare.
